UB Peer Mediators Gear Up for a Supportive School Community Ahead

To establish a secure and inclusive academic environment for the school year 2026-2027, the University of Baguio conducted the Peer Mediators’ Training last September 22 and 23, 2026, at the Legacy Multi-purpose Hall. Facilitated by members and representatives from the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) and the high school department, the initiative prepared student leaders to serve as peer helpers and positive representatives of the school community.

The two-day training brought together newly selected and returning peer mediators, giving them with opportunities to develop essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to support their fellow students and connect them with appropriate school support services.

CCSD PEER MEDIATORS: Supportive and Focused

The first day focused on team building and strengthening the Peer Mediation team. Through interactive and collaborative activities facilitated by Dr. Irene T. Alcantara, the peer mediators were given opportunities to build trust, improve communication, recognize individual strengths, and strengthen cooperation among team members.

Officers from the High School Supreme Student Government (HSSG) joined the peer mediators on the second day of the training, equipping both groups with a chance to interact and learn from one another in advancing the welfare and well-being of students. Mr. Ian R. Alangdeo led the training, “Building Safe Spaces: Promoting Inclusion, Respect, and Well-Being,” which emphasized the role of student leaders in establishing organizations and spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, welcomed, and heard.

It was then followed by the presentation of Mr. Zhein Carlo Molina on “Bridging Students to School Support Services.” His session focused on the various services and programs offered by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

The training concluded with a session on Psychological First Aid (PFA), facilitated by Ms. Leny O. Estacio. The session presented the basic ways to provide immediate, practical, and supportive assistance to individuals experiencing distress. More than simply equipping students with skills, the training emphasized that being a peer mediator is a responsibility and a position of trust.

Over two days, the peer mediators and HSSG officers strengthened their knowledge, skills, and commitment to supporting their fellow UBians. With empathy, responsibility, and collaboration, they are prepared to help build a safer, kinder, and more inclusive UB High School community.

Led with purpose and initiatives that fall under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) 3, 4, 10, and 16, an emphasis on peer support and student leadership as contributing factors to a positive and inclusive learning environment is carried out, consequently supporting the university’s commitment to promote the good health and well-being of all UBian stakeholders.
