UBHS Shines Bright at 24th Word Cup Philippines with Impressive Haul of Awards

The University of Baguio High School (UBHS) once again showcased its journalistic excellence, with its talented student-writers making a significant impact at the prestigious 24th Word Cup Philippines: Campus Journalism Contest. The competition, held from April 4th to 6th, 2025, at Ating Tahanan in Baguio City, brought together aspiring student-journalists from across the nation under the inspiring theme of experiential learning. Four dedicated student-journalists from Newslite, the official English publication of UBHS, along with the Newslite school paper adviser, attended this esteemed competition, demonstrating the school’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

Beyond the enriching workshops designed to hone their skills, the UBHS delegation plunged into the fiercely contested writing categories, showcasing their talent and dedication in News Writing, Feature Writing, Science and Technology Writing, and the crucial elements of Copyreading and Headline Writing. These workshops, facilitated by expert and experienced journalists, provided invaluable learning opportunities for all participants. Rising to the challenge with remarkable skill and determination, these young journalists didn’t just participate – they triumphed, bringing home an impressive collection of awards that underscore the strength of UBHS’s journalism program. This participation and the development of these skills directly align with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Jana Erika R. Sales led the team with an impressive collection of accolades, winning 1st Place in News Writing, 3rd Place in Feature Writing (English), and 3rd Place in Science and Technology Writing. Yonan Ycko I. Pugong captured 1st Place in Feature Writing (English) while also earning Honorable Mentions in both Science & Technology Writing and Copyreading & Headline Writing categories. Kylashaneille B. Lee secured 3rd Place in News Writing and received Honorable Mentions in Science & Technology Writing and Copyreading & Headline Writing, while Evangelie D. Magdael earned 3rd Place in Feature Writing (Filipino).

Adding to the school’s impressive showing, UBHS school paper adviser, Hail Angel V. Payas-Lerio, also excelled in the School Paper Adviser Category, securing 2nd Place in Science & Technology Writing, 2nd Place in News Writing, 3rd Place in Feature Writing, and an Honorable Mention in Copyreading & Headline Writing.

“This achievement reflects our students’ dedication to journalistic excellence and their ability to communicate effectively across different writing formats,” said Mrs. Payas-Lerio. “We’re incredibly proud of how they represented UBHS on this national platform.”
